Treating Sinus Infection
|
The sinuses are air filled pockets within the bones of the face. As the sinuses create mucus, it is passed from the sinuses into the nasal passageways by small hair like structures called cilia effectively clearing the nasal passages and flushing out bacteria and other harmful debris. The sinuses can become clogged with bacteria and other debris, causing an infection. Treating sinus infections can be difficult depending on the severity of the infection, but for most people it's a simple process and can be easily dealt with. IRRIGATE It is important to remember to keep your nasal passageways clear. Regularly blowing your nose and using nasal sprays can help clear out your nasal passageways keeping away harmful bacteria and debris. It is important not to use OTC (over the counter) nasal sprays more than three days though, as you could experience the “rebound effect”, your nasal passageways experience extreme inflammation. MEDICATE Take any and all antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications that your doctor prescribes to you. It is VERY important to take ALL of the medication that they give you. You should never have any left over, as it is possible for the infection to become stronger than the antibiotic you’re taking. HYDRATE Drinking plenty of clear liquids can help immensely as it will thin all of that heavy mucus and make it more susceptible for drainage. Water, Gatorade, Sprite or other clear liquids are all good options, but make sure you stay clear of milk and other creamy liquids as they just intensify congestion. APPLY WARMTH AND MOISTURE One of the best ways to find relief is to apply warmth and moisture to the nasal cavities. They get irritated and inflamed because they are dry, using a humidifier or taking a long hot shower can help loosen mucus and increase drainage. Applying a warm compress over the affected sinus or breathing the stream from a hot cup of tea can help as well, but make sure you don’t burn yourself. PREVENTION Treating sinus infections does not have to be as difficult as we make it, following a set of simple rules can make it much easier to deal with and even help prevent sinus infections in the future. Blowing your nose regular, and daily nasal irrigation with a saline solution help keep the nasal passages and sinus cavities clear reducing the risk of infection.
