Maxillary Sinusitis Complications

We each have four sets of sinuses. The frontal are located in the bones of our forehead, the ethmoid are located on either side of the bridge of the nose, the sphenoid are located behind the eyes and the maxillary are located within our cheekbones. The most susceptible of these to infection are the maxillary due to their large size, location and drainage pattern. While it is normally easily treated with minimal complications, there are some maxillary sinusitis complications that can arise if it goes untreated.

Some maxillary sinusitis complications include:

  • Blindness
  • Vertigo
  • Osteomyelitis

The maxillary sinuses are the most commonly infected set of sinuses. A number of causes can trigger a maxillary sinus infection, even bad oral hygiene due to their close proximity to the mouth. If left untreated the infection and swelling can spread causing a whole host of other problems for the patient.

BLINDNESS

As with all sinus infections, maxillary sinusitis causes swelling. However the swelling can spread to the front of the face around the eyes. If the eyes become severely swollen the swelling can advance at a very rapid pace. Within minutes to hours it could lead to blindness. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms contact your physician immediately.

VERTIGO

If the infection spreads to the ears it can cause dizziness, or vertigo. The tympanic membrane, which controls balance, is housed within the ear. If it becomes infected it sends mixed signals to the brain and the feeling of dizziness can be felt. It can also be caused if infection spreads to the eyelids, resulting in puffy and swollen eyelids.

OSTEOMYELITIS

This is caused when the infection spreads to the bones surrounding the maxillary sinuses. It is difficult to diagnose however, because symptoms are so similar to that of acute sinusitis. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, drainage from the nose, pain, swelling and tenderness of the cheeks and/or nose.

PREVENTION

While these are just a few complications of maxillary sinusitis the infection can spread much further, even to the brain which can become life threatening. The best method of prevention is to treat the sinus infection in its early stages. Your doctor can prescribe a variety of medications to assist your immune system in fighting the infection before it can progress and spread to other parts of the body.
