Home Remedies For Sinusitis

Sinusitis is the inflammation is the blockage of the sinuses, which causes an accumulation of mucus within the sinus cavities providing the perfect environment for an infection to form. Depending on the severity of your infection, sinusitis can range from being very easy to treat to being quite difficult. Commonly, sinusitis will last for seven to ten days and there are several home remedies for sinusitis that make it easy to treat.

Acute sinusitis will normally take effect after a cold or viral infection, and lasts seven to ten days. With the proper care and treatment antibiotics are not needed to treat the infection and get you back on your feet. Some of these home remedies include:

  • Steam inhalation
  • Increase liquid intake
  • Nasal irrigation
  • Eat spicy foods
  • Utilize warm compresses

KEEP YOUR NASAL PASSAGEWAYS MOIST

The sinuses become blocked when the nasal passageways swell due to irritation caused by bacteria and other debris. This happens because the nasal passageways get dry, due to the lack of mucus being passed through them. It is important to keep them moist, so as to maintain the health of the cilia.

  • Using a humidifier will not only maintain moisture within your passageways, but it will also help break up congestion and thin the mucus membrane. If do not have access to a humidifier, taking long hot showers or breathing the stream from a basin of boiling water will work as well. You can also add eucalyptus oil to the water to help fight infection.
  • Drinking 6 to 10 glasses of water will help thin the mucus membrane, and make it easier to drain. It is important to drink plenty of clear liquids, and stay away from dairy products as dairy will thicken the mucus. Caffeine will dry out your nasal passageways, so it is advised to stay away from liquids with caffeine as well.
  • A nasal irrigation kit will help clear your nasal passageways and keep them moist. A neti pot can be purchased at your local drug store and it helps a saline solution, warm salt water solution, flow through your nasal passageways and sinuses flushing out bacteria and other debris.

KEEP IT SPICY

Eating spicy foods such as cayenne pepper, garlic, horseradish sauce and wasabi will help thin the mucus membrane and break up congestion. Adding a bit of any of these to your food will help considerably with congestion and make it easier to breathe. The spicier the better, add as much as you can comfortably eat.

ADD WARMTH AND MOISTURE WITH A COMPRESS

Another great way to break up congestion is through the use of a warm compress. Dip a washcloth in hot water (not too hot, if it burns it's too hot), and place it over the affected sinuses while you are lying down. Leave it on for 3 - 5 minutes and you should notice the affects. It will break up congestion and make it easier for the sinuses to drain.

While these remedies can help greatly, if your symptoms last longer than 7 to 10 days it is recommended that you see your physician for further medical attention. While acute sinusitis can be treated at home, chronic sinusitis requires the use of antibiotics to fight the infection.
