How To Stop Sinusitis
|
For some people, sinusitis is a recurring issue that they deal with several times a year. It could be due to a physical problem, such as a deviated septum, or it could be due to environmental issues such as allergies, mold or pet dander. While antibiotics will help treat a sinus infection once it has taken hold, it won't do much to keep the problem from happening again. However there are some measures that can be taken to prevent the problem from happening again. MAKE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES Changing the environment in your home can greatly improve your chances of avoiding sinusitis altogether. If your sinus problems are caused by allergies you can install filters to your air conditioner and heating unit to filter out unwanted allergens and pollen. Moistening the air in your home with the use of a humidifier can help keep your nasal passageways moist, and allow better drainage and circulation of mucus. An air conditioner can help stabilize the temperature in your home. ALTAR YOUR DIET There are several things that we eat that affect our sinuses in both positive and negative ways. Limiting the amount of dairy intake will help greatly. While we all love our milk and cheese, dairy secretions increase congestion and will thicken mucus making inflammation and swelling more likely. Increasing the intake of spicy foods can help as well. Foods that contain cayenne pepper, horseradish and garlic will help thin mucus and make it easier to drain. Drinking plenty of water is important not only for your sinuses, but for your overall health as well. Drinking 6 to 10 glasses of water a day will help keep your sinuses moist and keep the cilia moving. Cilia are small hair-like structures that line the walls of the nasal passageways and they move the mucus out of the sinuses and keep them clear. AVOID CHLORINE AND PRESSURE CHANGES Chlorine and drastic altitude changes can have a damaging affect on your sinuses making sinus infections a much more likely possibility. Chlorine can dry out the nasal passageways, which leads to irritation and inflammation. Rapid changes in altitude and pressure (such as flying, sky diving or deep sea diving) can cause pain in the sinus and cause swelling of the Eustachian tubes in the ears. MAINTAIN MOISTURE IN THE NASAL/SINUS CAVITIES Regular steam treatments and using a humidifier when you sleep will keep your sinuses moist, and help them to continue to flush out bacteria before an infection can form. This is also an effective way to break up sinus congestion and clear the nasal passageways. You can also infuse the steam with herbal extracts such as Eucalyptus, mint or garlic. By making a few changes to your day to day life you can effectively eliminate the chances of getting a sinus infection, or at the very least largely prevent the chances of getting one. These are just a few examples of how to stop sinusitis, but they should make a relatively large difference in the way you feel and the overall health of your sinuses.
