Nasal Congestion Remedies
|
Nasal congestion can be one of the most frustrating and even painful things that you can deal with. It can affect your sense of balance, sense of taste and smell and be a hinder in your daily life. Nasal congestion is caused when the walls of the nasal passageways get irritated and begin to swell. Mixed with a thick mucus membrane, congestion is formed. Thankfully, there are several nasal congestion remedies that make the symptoms easier to deal with and can eliminate them completely. Nasal congestion is caused by the swelling of the thin membrane that lines the nasal passageways, due to infection or irritation caused by allergies. You can reduce symptoms with several easy home remedies that include:
STEAM INHALATION Steam inhalation is one of the quickest ways to find relief from those pesky nasal congestion symptoms. Irritation is usually caused because the nasal passageways are dry, so you want to keep them nice and moist. Using a humidifier can help greatly, just place it next to your bed while you sleep and breathe in the warm vapor. If you do not have access to a humidifier, taking long hot showers will replicate the effect. You can also breathe the steam from a basin of boiling water. Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water will not only help clear congestion, but it can also help fight any infection that you may have. OTC PRODUCTS It goes without saying that taking medication will help, there are a variety of decongestants that you can take that will clear the congestion. Decongestants can be purchased in either an oral pill form or in the form of a nasal spray. If you are using a nasal spray it is important that you do not use it for more than three days. Your nasal passageways can get accustomed to having the nasal spray to help them stay open, and if you take it away suddenly they will become extremely inflamed. This is referred to as the “rebound effect”. HYDRATION As mentioned before, you want to keep your nasal passageways moist, and the best way to do that is by drinking plenty of fluids. Drinking 6 to 10 glasses of water a day will help thin the mucus membrane, and keep the cilia moving freely keeping them able to move mucus out of the sinuses. You want to stay away from liquids such as milk, and other dairy products, as well as anything with caffeine or high amounts of sugar. Dairy products will thicken the mucus membrane and contribute to congestion while caffeine will dry out your passageways.
