Sinusitis Remedy

Prepared or not, sinus infections happen. Normally following a cold or viral infection, your sinuses become blocked, fill with mucus and before you know it become infected. While there is little you can in the way of preventing sinus infections, there are a ton of helpful remedies to help ease the pain once one settles in and calls your sinuses home. Everyone has their own special sinusitis remedy that they claim will ease the various ailments associated with sinusitis and most actually do.

Feeling clogged up and groggy? Take one of these remedies for a spin and see if it doesn't help:

  • Steam Inhalation
  • Warm Compresses
  • Nasal Irrigation
  • Spicy Foods
  • OTC Medications

STEAM INHALATION

Steam can work wonders for clearing up congestion and promoting drainage. Congestion and blockage is triggered by dry nasal passageways. When the nasal passages become dry, the cilia can no longer move and they have trouble passing mucus out of the sinuses. The best way to treat this? Warmth and moisture.

Using a humidifier while you sleep, or simply breathing the warm vapor for fifteen minutes, will help thin the mucus, add moisture to the nasal passages and the warmth will break up congestion. Leaving a humidifier running at home or in your office will also help keep the air moist.

WARM COMPRESSES

Remember the key to beating congestion and promoting drainage? That's right, warmth and moisture. Dip a wash cloth in warm to hot water and place it over the affected sinuses while lying down. After 3 to 5 minutes you'll begin to notice some progress and should be able to blow your nose to clear some discharge.

NASAL IRRIGATION

A nasal irrigation kit, such as a neti-pot, can be your best friend during a bout with a sinus infection. Neti-pots rinse out your nasal passageways with a saline solution flushing out debris, bacteria and dried mucus making breathing much easier. Doing this twice daily will keep your cilia healthy and moving, and make breathing and draining much easier.

SPICY FOODS

Some people can live off of spicy foods. Jalapenos, cayenne pepper, horseradish, the more the better. That old saying "it really clears your sinuses" has some substance when it comes to sinus infections.

Eating foods that contain cayenne pepper, garlic, horseradish and wasabi will thin the mucus membrane and promote drainage.

OTC MEDICATIONS

If you need an extra boost to help relieve symptoms OTC medications are your answer. Decongestants work by restricting blood flow to the nasal passageways actively reducing inflammation. They can be purchase in the form or oral medications or as a nasal spray. Sudafed is a popular oral decongestant, and Afrin is a popular nasal spray. Nasal sprays should only be used for 3 days though, because there is a high risk of dependency. Tylenol and Advil can be used for pain.
