Ethmoid Sinusitis Symptoms

The ethmoid sinuses are located on either side of the bridge of the nose. The ethmoid sinuses are very important because the frontal sinuses (located in the forehead) and the maxillary sinuses (located in the cheeks) drain fluids through the anterior parts of these sinuses into the nose. When inflammation occurs the tiny nasal opening, also known as the ostia, in the sinuses closes making it difficult for them to drain. In this article we are going to look at the ethmoid sinusitis symptoms, and how it affects those suffering with ethmoiditis or ethmoid sinusitis.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms associated with ethmoid sinusitis include:

  • Headache in the temples and corners of the eyes
  • Stuffy/runny nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Chest congestion
  • Pain in the lower forehead
  • Pressure around the inner corners of the eyes
  • Worsening of the symptoms while lying on the back, and improvement when sitting upright

CAUSE

Ethmoid sinusitis can be caused by a number of factors either by a bacterial agent, a fungus or even allergies. Nasal polyps also have an effect, as well as viral infections and trauma. It can be acute or chronic, depending on the length of time the patient has been experiencing symptoms. Acute ethmoid sinusitis normally lasts seven to ten days, while chronic ethmoid sinusitis lasts up to 12 weeks and occurs several times a year.

The fact that the ethmoid sinuses are so close to the eyes could be an issue if there is an infection and it is not treated promptly and properly. If the infection becomes chronic, there is the potential for blood clots to form. This could cause swollen and droopy eyelids, and an infection within the eye socket. It is highly recommended to see a doctor if you have developed any of these symptoms as they can cause permanent blindness or disable movement of the eyes.

PREVENTION

There are ways to prevent infection, and they include:

  • A yearly influenza vaccination
  • Healthy diet and exercise
  • Plenty of sleep
  • Plenty of water

Staying up to date on influenza vaccines can help reduce the risk of infection throughout the year. As most cases of sinusitis develop as a result of viral infections, this is a good first line of defense in warding off infection. Plenty of antioxidants and a healthy diet also boost the immune system and give it a better chance of fighting off infection. Plenty of sleep is essential to the wellness of your body as it will give it a chance to rest and recover. Last but not least, plenty of water helps keep to thin mucus and secretions within the nasal cavities.
