Severe Sinusitis Symptoms (Chronic Sinusitis)

When our nasal passages begin to swell due to irritation from bacteria and debris, they begin to block of the opening to the sinus cavities. This causes the sinuses to fill with fluid and gives an infection the chance to form. This is called sinusitis and acute sinusitis lasts for seven to ten days, normally following a cold or viral infection. However, in some cases the symptoms last up to twelve weeks and this is called chronic sinusitis, or severe sinusitis. Let's take a look at the various severe sinusitis symptoms, and what causes them.

SYMPTOMS

Severe sinusitis symptoms are just as they sound, in that they are more aggressive than that of acute sinusitis. They include:

  • Clear, thin discharge
  • Ear pain
  • Aching in the teeth and jaw
  • Postnasal drip (which often leads to a sore throat)
  • Halitosis
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability and mood swings

Other symptoms include:

  • Pain around the eyes, cheeks and/or nose
  • Nasal congestion
  • Loss of sense of taste and smell

CAUSE

One of the leading causes of severe sinusitis is an untreated acute sinus infection. Without proper treatment and care the sinus infection will progress and symptoms will begin to worsen. Not all cases are a result of this however, other causes include:

  • A deviated septum
  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Trauma to the face
  • Allergic reactions/allergic rhinitis

COMPLICATIONS

While severe sinusitis can be treated, there are several complications that can arise as a result. If severe sinusitis continues to go untreated it can trigger asthma attacks, and put you at a risk for stroke. Depending on which sinuses it effects, it raises the possibility of forming blood clots which inhibit the flow of oxygen to the brain. It can also spread to other parts of the body, including swelling around the eyes which could lead to temporary vision loss which can later become permanent.

TREATMENT

While severe sinusitis symptoms can seem intimidating, there are treatment options available to alleviate the pain and stress that they are associated with. A doctor can prescribe oral antibiotics, or antifungal, and if the situation is bad enough surgery is an option as well. Sinus Dynamics offers a variety of safe, topical treatments that eliminate the chance of developing resistance to oral medication, and gives a viable option other than surgery.
