Chronic Sinusitis Treatment

Sinusitis is caused by the inflammation of the nasal passageways, making it difficult for the sinuses to drain mucus. When the openings of the sinuses get blocked, they fill with mucus which often times leads to an infection as it allows for bacteria to begin growing. While most cases are acute, meaning it lasts seven to ten days; many people suffer from chronic sinusitis which can last twelve weeks or longer with much more severe symptoms. While it may be serious, there are many different types of chronic sinusitis treatment.

As the infection grows the symptoms become more severe and there is a higher risk involved if the infection goes untreated. It becomes more difficult to function in everyday life which can be very aggravating with the responsibilities that we all have. Luckily there are several types of treatment available to help those suffering from these symptoms.

The three types of treatment include:

  • Oral - antibiotic, antifungal and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Surgical - FESS, and balloon sinuplasty
  • Topical - aerosolized, atomized and nasal irrigation treatments

ORAL TREATMENT

Oral medications are most commonly prescribed to treat sinus infections. Depending on the cause of the infection, antibiotic, antifungal or anti-inflammatory medications are prescribed to ease the symptoms and fight the infection. Sometimes a compounded medication is prescribed, which is a mixture of the three. However, there is a risk of developing a resistance to the medications and since they utilize the blood stream to deposit medication, this makes it difficult for it to reach the sinuses since they do not have much blood flow.

SURGICAL TREATMENT

Surgical treatments are an alternative to oral medications. FESS (functional endoscopic sinus surgery) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that opens sinus air cells and sinus ostia (the opening of the sinuses) with an endoscope. The doctor will shave parts of the bone and tissue away using an endoscope, opening the nasal passageways making it possible for the mucus to drain from the sinuses. Another procedure is balloon sinuplasty, where using a wire the doctor inserts a small balloon into the nasal passageways. The balloon in then inflated to a quarter of an inch, causing immediate drainage of the sinuses. Both procedures are effective on immediate terms, however they do not treat the infection itself meaning that most patients will undergo procedures several times in their life.

TOPICAL TREATMENT - HOW SINUS DYNAMICS CAN HELP YOU

The most effective form of eliminating sinusitis is through the use of topical treatment. Sinus Dynamics offers three types of topical treatment that are shown to provide a 300% increase in infection free time vs. oral antibiotics for post surgery patients (according to the Wahl Study). All three treatments use compounded medication and solutions delivered via a drug delivery device directly to the sinuses, depending on the patient's condition.

AEROSOLIZED THERAPY

The first of the three treatments is an aerosolized treatment that breaks down compounded medication to a 1.0 to 3.2 micron sized particle, making it possible for medication to travel through the tightest of spaces and reach the deepest pits of the sinuses. In the case of sinusitis the smaller the particle the better, meaning that the medication will be able to reach the smallest parts of the sinus cavities.

ATOMIZED THERAPY

The second form is atomized therapy. Atomized therapy propels solutions directly to the sinuses using positive pressure. Much in the same fashion as the aerosolized treatment, this treatment atomizes solutions to a size of 6.0 to 10.0 microns.

NASAL IRRIGATION

The last form of treatment is nasal irrigation. Nasal irrigation uses a mixture of an all natural, preservative free sea salt saline mixture and solutions to cleanse the nasal passageways, clearing them of bacteria and debris and freeing the cilia to move mucus from the sinuses and out of the nasal passageways.

Chronic sinusitis treatment varies depending on the patient's condition and what their doctor feels is the best treatment option for them. Most acute cases of sinusitis are easily treated with a heavy dose of oral medications, while most cases of chronic sinusitis involve a more hands-on form of treatment.
