Nasal Congestion Treatment

Nasal congestion can be a very annoying problem that leads to sinusitis and other types of illnesses. Normally caused by a cold or flu, nasal congestion is the swelling of the nasal passageways due to bacteria and debris irritating the membrane lining the nasal passages. While there's not much you can do to prevent it, there are several forms of nasal congestion treatment that can ease the symptoms and make it a little easier to deal with.

FIRST STEP: MOISTURE

What causes nasal congestion is nasal irritation. The nasal passage walls become dry and irritated by bacteria and debris, swelling up and stopping the flow of mucus from the sinuses. The best way to relieve symptoms of nasal congestion is to keep your nasal passages moist. There are many ways to accomplish this and they include:

  • Using a humidifier
  • Taking long, hot showers
  • Breathing over a boiling pot of water (CAREFULLY!)
  • Nasal irrigation

Each of these methods will help keep your nasal passageways moist, and will help thin the mucus making it easier to drain.

SECOND STEP: COMPRESS, ELEVATE, IRRIGATE

There are many other ways to ease the pain of nasal congestion and they can all be done at home. Let's take a look at a few of these options:

  • Use a warm compress over the infected sinus. Placing a warm, moist towel over your face can help relieve the pressure and clear your sinuses.
  • Keeping yourself propped up at night by using a few extra pillows to keep your head elevated can help make breathing a bit easier.
  • Nasal irrigation can help flush bacteria and other debris from your nasal passages. Using a mixture of saline (natural sea salt mixture) and medication will help give your nasal passages a “bath”, in turn keeping your sinuses healthy. You can buy irrigation kits at the store, or Sinus Dynamics offers a nasal irrigation kit that comes with a custom molded bottle designed for ease of use. Also, it does not have an inner-tube, which eliminates the chance of bacterial growth within the bottle.

THIRD STEP: MEDICATE

If you are still having trouble finding relief using these methods you can always employ the use of different medications that are designed to help with nasal congestion. There are nasal decongestants which come in the form of nasal sprays or pills. Antihistamines are used for those with nasal problems brought on by allergies, and typical pain killers can used for the pain associated with sinusitis but they won't do anything as far as congestion is concerned.
