Sinusitis Treatment Guidelines
|
Sinusitis is an infection of the paranasal sinuses due to inflammation of the nose. It is now commonly referred to as rhinosinusitis, and is normally contracted after a cold or virus infection. The symptoms often include nasal congestion, a greenish-yellow discharge (depending on acute or chronic), pain in the upper teeth and jaw, facial pain and pressure, etc. There are several ways to treat sinusitis, ranging from the use of oral medications to surgery and the use of aerosolized and atomized therapies. In this article we are going to take a look at sinusitis treatment guidelines. ACUTE SINUSITIS Acute sinusitis rarely requires the use of antibiotics, so it is normal for doctors to wait seven to ten days before they prescribe any form of antibiotic. In most cases, acute sinusitis is easily resolved through the use of home remedies, and over the counter decongestants. A few of these remedies include:
Maintaining adequate hydration is extremely important to the health of the nasal passageways and sinus cavities. Most irritation and inflammation in the nasal passageways is due to the fact that they are dry, as mucus is not flowing freely. Drinking plenty of water (6 - 10 glasses a day) helps thin the mucus, and helps it flow easier. Another way to maintain moisture within the nasal passages is to take long hot showers, or breath in the steam from boiling water (carefully, of course). Nasal irrigation, the act of flushing a warm saline mixture through your nasal passages, can help as well. You can purchase an irrigation kit at your local drug store. CHRONIC SINUSITIS If your sinusitis symptoms last longer than seven to ten days, than it has progressed to what is called chronic sinusitis, and can last up to twelve weeks (or longer, in some cases). At this point antibiotics are normally prescribed to aid in the relief of symptoms. Antibiotics will be prescribed for ten to fourteen days. A nasal steroid spray may also be prescribed for certain cases of recurrent sinusitis. If symptoms persist for 3 to 4 weeks the patient is normally referred to an ENT for consultation about surgery. ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT Sinus Dynamics offers alternative treatment to those who are not able to find the relief they are looking for with surgical and oral treatments. Through the use of aerosolized, atomized and nasal irrigation therapy, medication and solution is delivered directly to the sinuses. These treatments are topical, which mean that there is no risk of developing resistance to oral medications.
